Hi, I'm Debs! I am the founder of Adaptive Apparel and the maker of all it's creations. I am a wife, a mother to two beautiful daughters, and a full time software developer in the legal industry.
Whilst I have your attention, I am hoping to grow my business organically by reaching people far and wide across the UK. If you find our t-shirts useful, please help spread the word by telling your medical team, friends and family all about us. Thank you.
Adaptive Apparel launched in March 2021, but our journey started back in Summer 2020 when my parents went for a beach walk after the lifting of the first Covid-19 lockdown in the UK following weeks of boredom and monotony.
At the end of their walk, just as they were heading back to their car, my mum slipped, fell to the ground, and broke her humerus bone. Sadly, with lockdown, she had to go to hospital alone, and I felt very helpless.
Because of the painful break and the surgery that followed, my Mum was unable to use her left arm for months while she recovered. One of the main struggles she faced was getting dressed. It is something we all take for granted, but with her arm out of use, and the pain she felt, moving her arm to simply put it into a sleeve just wasn't possible. After searching online for alternative orthopaedic wear, I found there was nothing at all that would offer a solution.
As a keen lover of sewing, this is where I knew I could help. I bought some comfortable cotton t-shirts, hook-and-loop fastening, and I adapted t-shirts to opened and close with ease around her cast and sling. This gave my mum the sense of comfort and independence that she needed. My parents and the medical professionals at the hospital found the tops to be a blessing!
In late March 2021 I launched Adaptive Apparel to help other people who find themselves in the same unfortunate position as my Mum and that's how we began.
